THE WEE CROFT STONEYBURN

The Wee Croft Drop-In is located at Redcroft Place, Stoneyburn. The West Lothian Youth Action Project (WLYAP), in partnership with West Lothian Council Services, manages this facility. The young people who attend this Drop-In can access IT equipment, pool and computer counsels. The young people are provided with information and advice about other youth services and where they can be located. The Wee Croft also aims to encourage young people to broaden their horizons and take ownership of things that directly impact on them and their community.

The Wee Croft committee makes their own decisions on the day to day running of their building. The young peoples committee is made up of ten members representing all the young people who use the Drop-In. There are two representatives from this committee on WLYAP Youth Forum Y.A.C. who are also in the process of being nominated as young peoples representatives of Stoneyburn/Bents Community Council.

In the last year we have taken part in the following areas:-

Garden Project

As part of the garden project in the summer of 2007 the young people of Stoneyburn gained funding from O2. This funding enable them to embark on a garden project at the back of the building. The NETS team from West Lothian Council gave the young people some assistance with the work. As a result of their efforts the young people now have a green space that they prepared for themselves. The NETS team are keen to work with these young people again this year. The young people have been in negotiations with their Community Council, Local Councillor and the Nets team to help with the planned upgrade of their Community War Memorial.

Summer Programme

As part of the Summer programme last year, as well as day trips to the beach and local parks etc. The young people thought their best trips were their residential to Balquhidder and their trip to Eli Waters.

Theatre Project

We were part of a pilot programme that was being done by The Citdel Theatre group a local Edinburgh company. The writer Cecelia Rose of the short play ‘Perhaps Probably, Maybe’, brought the actors to show the young people a short performance. The young people were then consulted on the language used and the acting to see what they thought. As a result of this consultation the actors changed parts of their performance and came to the Wee Croft to perform the entire play in its final form. This was a very enjoyable experience for everyone who took part.

Debt or Saving Handling Training (D.O.S.H.)

The Wee Croft was the venue for a pilot of this for 16-21year old young people that run for four weeks just before Christmas. The young people found that they learned a lot.

    News...War Memorial

Some of the young men from the Wee Croft turned out on 19th April at half past nine on a cold Saturday morning to prepare the ground around the newly restored war memorial. This was done to enable the planting to go ahead with the primary school children. The whole community has been involved in the restoration of the village war memorial. The young people and staff from the Wee Croft would like to thank Linda Blake for the photographs and the article that was written in the Stonyburn Bents community newsletter regarding this event.
