Broxburn Cyber-cafe

The Youth Action Cyber-Café (Y.a.c.c) was developed in partnership with the charity West Lothian Youth Action Project and West Lothian Council. Initially the project was developed with financial support from the Esmee Fairbairn Trust.

    Aims:

  • To offer accurate information and support when tackling issues affecting young people.
  • To provide an appropriate area where the young people can feel safe, comfortable and relaxed when socialising and hanging out with friends.
  • To provide an efficient and safe internet service with Guidance and technical support to ensure young people are able to use the computers to access the Internet safely.
  • To raise levels of self-esteem, confidence, and to promote healthy living.
  • To encourage young people to develop and gain new skills.
The Internet café has now secured funding through the WLYAP core budget, however we continue to rely on sponsorship and charitable gifts from agencies, businesses and people within the community. This additional funding is aimed to provide extra equipment, activities and sessions for young people who attend the drop-in sessions.

Yacc staff have provided a choice of free activities available for the young people of Broxburn and surrounding areas such as, Pumpherston, Winchburgh, and Uphall. These activities include internet access, music, art and healthy eating sessions. We also provide workshops based on a variety of issues such as, bullying, community safety, drugs and alcohol and anti-social behaviour. Further to this we also offer seasonal events such as easter eggstravaganza, Halloween and Christmas parties. We also have access to a summer programme which offers a range of trips and activities during the summer break.

We are currently running a youth committee to assist us in improving the café facilities and activities, but also to give the young people a sense of ownership in the day-to-day running of their service.

Further activities and services are currently in development, this includes “Cycle Scotland – Cycling Club”, the aims of this piece of work will be to encourage healthy lifestyles, cycle safety awareness, and cycle maintenance.
